Another ’90s Trend Is Back In a Big Way

The Backstreet Boys are touring, Britney Spears has a big single out and everyone is wearing overalls. Are we sure it’s not actually 1998?

Further adding to our suspicion that we’ve time traveled (see also: floral sundresses and crop tops galore) is the latest trend we’ve seen on stars from Rihanna to AnnaSophia Robb (neither pictured).

RELATED PHOTOS: See (and vote on) more out-there star style in “Obsessed or Hot Mess?

Though relegated in recent years to moms just trying to be practical and bring a sweater with them to the movies, the shirt tied purposefully around the waist is making a major comeback on stylish stars including (from left) Gwen Stefani, Vanessa Hudgens and Nicole Richie.

While Stefani and Richie both attempt high-fashion versions of the grungy look, Hudgens wears hers the most like we remember: Plaid, beat-up and ready to be repurposed as a slouchy top at a moment’s notice. Of course, this trend wasn’t always intentional the first time around — sometimes a girl just really needed a top to tie around her waist at a certain moment.

Tell us: Are you excited this look is coming back, or do you wish it would stay in the past millennium?

She pulls fashion risks like this. She’s married to a guy who looks like this. Her kids dress like this. And now we have even more proof that Gwen Stefani is the coolest singer/designer/mom on the planet: She’s launching a new nail polish collection with OPI!

“With her expertise as a singer, songwriter and designer, who better to collaborate with than Gwen Stefani?” OPI Executive VP and Artistic Director Suzi Weiss-Fischmann says in a statement. “Known for her trademark red lips, bold eye makeup and nail art, Gwen uses beauty to accessorize her style.”

RELATED: See what other beauty brands celebs are collaborating with

The signature shade of her seven-piece collection is “Over & Over A-Gwen,” a red polish inspired by her signature lipcolor. Others include “Push and Shove,” a chrome hue, and the glitter shade “In True Stefani Fashion.” And for nail art addicts, there’s a box set with black and silver Swarovski crystals and metallic studs in a variety of shapes. (Stefani herself wears a chic geometric mani in her ad!)

“OPI wanted to create a collection as dramatic, diverse and glamorous as its namesake,” Weiss-Fischmann says. “With crème and glitter hues, new satin matte texture, a mirrored chrome and Swarovski elements, Gwen Stefani by OPI presents the latest in pigments and finishes, while combining elements of haute couture and street fashion.”

Now that you have the rundown on the line, when can you buy it? Not until January 2014 (sigh). But it sounds like it’ll be worth the wait.

Are you excited about Stefani’s latest endeavor?

Gwen Stefani Launches Her Third Clothing Line

Ladies, prepare to have your style paradigm altered once again: Gwen Stefani is at the helm of yet another clothing line. The singer (and soon-to-be mom of three) has teamed up with denim legend Michael Glasser for a new label, DWP (Design With Purpose), which is devoted to bringing her cool aesthetic and his elevated-basics expertise to pieces like slouchy, cropped trousers.

“I was trying to get all the basics,” Stefani said in an interview with WWD. “Michael nailed the bottoms. For tops, I was trying to think about what I wear besides a tank top. I love cuffed-up sleeves, tops that are long in front and short in back. And we did a jumpsuit and a dress to fill in the gaps.”

This marks Stefani’s third foray into the clothing business — her high-end line L.A.M.B. is nearly ten years old, and Harajuku Lovers is a little younger than that. That’s not including her partnerships with OPI and active apparel line Burton and — oh yeah, making music and raising her sons. But she enjoys the challenge.

PHOTOS: You asked, we found: Gwen Stefani’s chic tuxedo blazer and more!

“The techniques are very complicated, and I don’t think they’ve ever been used on these kinds of fabrics,” Stefani says of learning the denim business through Glasser and translating it into their new collection. “But the actual designs are very simple because it’s all about everyday wear. So that’s different and new.”

You can check out the DWP collaboration at WWD.com; expect to see lots of tapered, roomy pants, drapey tanks and zippered vests not unlike what you might see Stefani wearing in her everyday life.

What do you think of her latest endeavor? Will you check out DWP when it hits stores this spring?

You’ve already looked back at some of the most jaw-dropping Grammys gowns of all time. Now we want to talk about the hair. Every year stars try to out-do (get it?!) each other with bold colors, cuts and style. So in honor of Throwback Thursday and Sunday’s 56th Annual Grammy Awards, we present four of our favorite mane moments.

Starting from top left, Gwen Stefani changed the braid game forever with her crazy head of plaits in 1998. Teamed with her late-’90s signature bindi and red lip, the No Doubt singer became the embodiment of cool Grammys style. (Gwen, if you’re listening, please bring your bump to the carpet this weekend!). Next, Beyoncé may have won five statues in 2004, but the real feat was how she managed to hold her head up under the weight of one of the most jaw-droppingly massive buns we’ve seen on the red carpet to date.

RELATED PHOTOS: 7 looks we’d love to see at the Grammys

In 2010, Rihanna hit the carpet with a blonde mohawk, which was buzzed at the sides — which kicked off four straight years of hair experimentation for the star. The style was so bold it almost distracted us from her white eyeshadow. Rounding out the group, Katy Perry ditched her trademark ebony shade for a bright blue hue, which happened to coordinate with that night’s demure Elie Saab gown.

Stars, you’ve got three days to figure out how to top any of these looks — and to make our tress roundup next year.

Which look is your favorite? Share your thoughts below!

By now, you’ve probably gotten your hands on Gwen Stefani‘s custom shades for OPI. And like the star herself, you’re excited to use the rocker-inspired hues — and accompanying nail art kits — in new and exciting ways. Because the mom-to-be is just that cool, she’s making it easy for you to experiment before you put on even one coat of polish, thanks to her new nail art app.

RELATED: The must-have for any manicure!

The app is part of a bigger multimedia experience centered around Stefani’s nailpolish collection (check out the whole thing at OPI.com/Gwen), where you can peruse inspiration photos, watch videos and get tutorials on how to create some of the trickier nail art using her collection. And if you’re feeling creative, you can use the app to digitally create nail art before trying it out on your own talons.

So what inspired Gwen to create this major mani experience? “I’m a huge girlie-girl when it comes to nails … When I’m doing performances or photo shoots and have the time, I really like to get into all of that,” the star told InStyle. “When my nails are done, I feel more complete, more ready.” Check out her app and submit your best work until Feb. 7 to be entered to win prizes!

Gwen Stefani's ShoeDazzle Line Launches Today! Will You Check It Out?

She’s got three clothing lines, a nailpolish collection and a third baby on the way, but that doesn’t mean Gwen Stefani is looking to take it easy anytime soon. The star has got another shoe line coming your way — this one an affordably-priced collaboration with ShoeDazzle.

Called Gx by Gwen Stefani and topping out at $111, the collection (consisting of 24 shoes and seven handbags) is meant to reflect the singer’s very eclectic tastes (and her penchant for killer shoes). “Whenever I design, I’m mixing different cultural influences and, always with the first collection of something new, I want to reflect on everything I’ve done in a way,” Stefani told WWD. “This kind of sums up all of my influences. The key colors are black, white and red, so it is pretty simple, but it has a lot of details.”

Her pal Rachel Zoe, ShoeDazzle’s chief stylist, said in a statement, “I couldn’t be more excited for the launch! Gwen is an incredible friend and designer. Her style has always been a huge source of inspiration to me.”

RELATED: Everything you need to know about the best of spring style!

Gwen Stefani shoedazzleCourtesy ShoeDazzle

And Zoe isn’t alone — the company’s president MJ Eng said they chose to collaborate with Stefani because customers constantly list her style at the top of their lust lists. But Stefani is just trying to find shoes that feel and look good, just like you. “The really big challenge is to get a shoe to look sexy and be at a comfortable height, and I think that we did that with the sandals,” she said. “I am trying to make the perfect shoe that you can wear all day long.”

And ultimately, her real goal is as simple as this: “I just wanted to make something that looked really good and high quality, but that you could afford. That was a challenge,” she said in the WWD interview. “I didn’t go to design school or anything like that. It is all about what I like and my instinct and working with great people, and trial and error.”

Kim's Shower Dress, Amal's Casual Engagement Party Look and More Wedding-Related Outfits You Must See

It’s May, which means wedding season is in full swing, and we bet your social calendar is pretty packed with various events right now. Same goes for celebrities. It was a busy weekend for stars and wedding-related activities in Hollywood. Now, we’re taking the time to analyze three outfits, worn by three different stars to three different bridal occasions.

John Mayer BathrobeINF;AKM-GSI; Splash News Online

First up, Kim Kardashian‘s Paris-themed bridal shower. The reality star selected a white knee-length dress with front buttons, a beaded halter and silver pumps for her party at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills Saturday. (Click here to see inside snaps from the photo booth!) The dress reminds us of a Lanvin design, completing a string of Lanvin looks for the star (see here and here), which (hint hint!) might be a clue to her wedding dress designer.

RELATED: Check out this complete timeline of Kim and Kanye’s journey to ‘I do’!

Next, George Clooney and fiancée Amal Alamuddin celebrated their engagement in Malibu Sunday at Cafe Habana, a restaurant owned by Clooney pal Rande Gerber, who is also Cindy Crawford’s husband. The party was low key (guests played karaoke!), and so was Alamuddin’s ensemble: a neon green t-shirt featuring a bedazzled skull wearing a bow, plus a black cardigan, floral shorts and wedges. So not what we imagine a high-powered lawyer wearing to her engagement party to the most eligible bachelor in the world!

Lastly, Gwen Stefani and husband Gavin Rossdale attended a friend’s wedding together in Palm Springs, Calif., in a very Gwen, very non-traditional wedding look — a black fit-and-flare mini and knee-high peep-toe boots, both L.A.M.B. And we don’t blame the singer (who welcomed her third son Apollo Bowie Flynn two months ago) for wanting to show off her impressive post-baby body.

What do you think of these three outfits? Were they suitable for each occasion? Which one is your favorite? Share your thoughts below.

Three Celebrity Signature Style Moves We Must Discuss

$
0
0

We define a star’s “style signature” as something they’ve worn out of the house, with clear intent, at least three times. After all, once is a fluke, twice is testing the waters and a third time’s a trend. And in recent weeks, these three stars have really committed to previously questionable fashion statements, to varying degrees of success. Let’s chat.

Shailene Woodley barefootGetty; Rex USA; FameFlynet

Gwen’s “downeralls:” Just when we’d adjusted to the idea that overalls are officially back in 2014, Gwen Stefani changed the style paradigm by wearing them completely off her shoulders. Without even giving us an interim moment to adjust — say, with one shoulder unclipped, Boy Meets World style — she slid the straps off and down around her hips for a whole new take on the look. We first saw her out in the black version of this Paige pair last week, and she wore them the same way onstage over the weekend. This may be one of those “For Gwen Only” looks that mere mortals can’t attempt, but who knows — maybe every girl at Lollapalooza will prove us wrong. Verdict: Jury’s still out.

RELATED PHOTOS: Vote on more interesting star style statements in Obsessed or Hot Mess!

Lupita’s bright blue eyeshadow: If you had told us at this time last year that one of the most in-demand starlets in Hollywood would be wearing bright blue eyeshadow constantly, we wouldn’t have believed you. But Lupita Nyong’o manages to make things look chic that would look absolutely crazy on other people. With her longtime makeup artist Nick Barose, the Oscar winner has single-handedly brought back vivid shadow — though we doubt anyone is making it work quite as well as she is. Verdict: Success!

Shailene’s bare feet on city streets: The first time we saw Shailene Woodley hoofing it sans shoes, we were sympathetic. We’ve all been there — you’re running out the door, so you grab your heels and jump in the car. But then we saw her exiting the Today Show (above left) with exposed toes Monday. Later that day, she again left the house, soles exposed, en route to the Fault In Our Stars premiere. We know heels aren’t for everyone, and we’ve got no problem with Shai switching into a pair of her beloved barefoot running sneakers as soon as her red carpet duties are done. But to willingly pound N.Y.C. pavement without any barrier between your body and the ground — that’s a choice we can’t even pretend to understand. Verdict: We hope there’s Purell in her clutch.

How do you feel about these looks? Tell us below!

Regular Overalls Not Dressy Enough For You? Try Celeb-Loved Black Denim Overalls Instead!

You’ve known about the return of overalls for a while now. You’ve seen them on noteworthy women as varied as Keira Knightley, Selena Gomez and Cressida Bonas. And maybe you’ve even embraced the trend, buying a pair for yourself and wearing them to music festivals and for weekend lounging. But now you realize that they just aren’t fancy enough for occasions like date night, high-end shopping and work. What’s a onesie-loving gal to do?

RELATED PHOTOS: See (and vote on!) even more bold star styles in Obsessed or Hot Mess!

Well, you could embrace the latest celebrity trend: black overalls. Like black jeans, these are the slightly dressier version of your favorite denim, fancy enough to wear to many offices and sassy enough for a night out. From left, Blake Lively wears the most polished version of the look, adding shiny patent brogues and a chic bag to her tailored pair. Kate Bosworth wore her Hudson Denim pair out on a date night (granted, it was a hockey game) with Robert Clergerie platform sandals, pink lipstick and a Dolce & Gabbana bag for a feminine twist. Gwen Stefani went slightly edgier by wearing her Paige overalls top-down (her new favorite look), but added stylish pieces like yellow loafers, a navy shell and cat-eye sunnies. And finally, Rumer Willis went most funky of all in a plunging tee and grungy boots.

PEOPLE StyleWatch editors are still split on this trend, but there’s no denying that the style in black has a certain je ne sais quoi. Have you already given overalls a shot? Do you prefer them in this dark wash? Tell us in the comments!

Throwback Thursday, VMAs Edition: See Our Most Memorable Style Moments Before Sunday's Awards

The MTV Video Music Awards are Sunday, and with them comes the promise of some truly memorable style moments. Since everyone from Lady Gaga to the Janoskians will score an invite, there’s bound to be a couple drop-dead-fabulous dresses, a few major fashion events and a couple outfits that will leaving you saying “What on earth?!” Below, we rounded up a few of our faves that fell into all those categories, and gave them the #TBT Instagram treatment for good measure. Check ‘em out and tell us your favorite VMA style memories in the comments!

MTV VMAs Gwen StefaniJim Smeal/WireImage

Loni Venti, Style and Beauty Writer: While there are loads of starlets with Crayola-inspired tresses today, let’s not forget that the real rainbow hair revolution began in the 90s—and that no one truly nailed it quite like Gwen Stefani. When the blue-bunned, bindi-adorned, bikini-rocking No Doubt frontwoman stepped out on the VMAs carpet in 1998, the getup that probably would have been a don’t on anyone not named Gwen Stefani soon became the quintessential late ’90s skater-babe look to steal. Despite wearing a Muppet bra and face bling, she still looked smokin’ and inspired lookalikes everywhere (my teenage self included).

MTV VMAs BeyonceBauer-Griffin

Catherine Kast, Writer/Reporter: Ah, 2011. It was a time before crop tops were a red carpet go-to, a time when girls dip-dyed their tips, and a simpler time, when celebs revealed their pregnancies in person, not over Instagram. Of course, Beyoncé let us know about baby Blue Ivy in predictably stellar fashion, in a one-shouldered Lanvin dress accessorized with a positively glowing complexion on the red carpet. (She drove the point home later on stage.) Raise your hand, “Single Ladies” style, if you think she never looked better!

RELATED PHOTOS: Everything else you need to know about the VMAs before Sunday!

MTV VMAs Paris HiltonBauer-Griffin

Andrea Lavinthal, Style and Beauty Director: There was a time in red carpet history when it wasn’t considered an A-list event unless Paris Hilton was in attendance, and that time was 2003. Before Paris became a household name for her Emmy award-winning work on The Simple Life, she was a socialite best known for making “home videos” and showing up to awards shows in brightly-colored strips of cloth. One of her more memorable “outfits” was the turquoise two-piece she wore to the VMAs. The tiny top and asymmetrical skirt were the perfect complement to her on-trend belly ring and spray-tanned skin. It’s a wonder there’s any bronzer and blonde hair extensions left on this Earth after that day.

MTV VMAs Olsen TwinsJon Kopaloff/FilmMagic

Alex Apatoff, Senior Style Editor: All my best style moments since 1993 involve one or both Olsen twins. Only slightly joking, but I did love this time in their lives before they became Serious Fashionistas and were still wearing goofy things like cropped flared capris, ruched lace tops, and matching haircuts with David Spade. (Sincerely, I want to know why they are on the arms of David Spade to introduce an award. 2003 was a weird year.) They’ve had sillier outfits and more memorable moments, but this one perfectly captures that tipping point between their “adorable tween stars” personas and their current reign as “CFDA Award Winners” who wouldn’t be caught dead within fifty miles of the VMAs red carpet.

MTV VMAs Lindsay LohanBauer-Griffin

Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: I bet you all forgot that Lindsay Lohan wore a purple mini dress with butt-framing, unzipped pockets on the back to the VMAs in 2008. That’s why I’m bringing it to your attention this Throwback Thursday, because really, it’s something that needs to be remembered. The detailing also exposed white satin liner, which popped against the eggplant color of her long-sleeve dress. I wonder if LiLo kept anything in there? A credit card? Lipgloss? As for the rest of the look, she went the matchy-matchy route with purple strappy sandals — catch the full length here — long blonde waves, and her most important accessory of the night — then-girlfriend Samantha Ronson.

MTV VMAs RihannaJon Kopaloff/FilmMagic

Jackie Fields, Beauty Writer: With Rihanna, it’s never just about the outfit. When the singer showed up to the 2012 MTV VMAS in a white Adam Selman dress, it was her brand new pixie that stole the show. While the crop was amazingly chic, I want to pay homage to this sleek, backless gown. I know this isn’t one of those risk-taking moments she’s known for, but from the crisp silhouette to the knotted front, I give her major props for putting together such an elegant look on a red carpet that’s often about pushing the, er, envelope (meat dress, anyone?).

Emmys 2014: Our Favorite Looks of the Night

$

0

By now, you’ve seen the hottest dresses to hit the Emmys red carpet and you’ve been texting your friends your picks for Obsessed or Hot Mess (heavy on the Hot Mess). We’re doing the same things here, so we decided to share our around-the-office chatter. And guess what? A mini, crop top and cape all made our list.

January Jones Emmys 2014Jin Ruymen/Landov

Loni Venti, Style and Beauty Editor: It’s tough to look edgy on the red carpet without sacrificing glamour, but Mad Men star January Jones effortlessly channels both vibes in this red-hot Prabal Gurung number. Her delicate-but-modern styling choices (like wearing one statement earring and a soft updo with a fierce fringe) create the perfect mix of cool-girl chic. This is a post-millennial movie star.

Julia Roberts Emmys 2014Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

Zoë Ruderman, Deputy Style and Beauty Director: When Style & Beauty Director Andrea Lavinthal picked this Elie Saab mini for a star to wear at the Emmys, I scoffed (A short dress? On TV’s glammest night? Pshaw!). But apparently Julia Roberts had a very different take than me. She heeded Andrea’s advice (at least that’s what I’m imagining) and wore the unexpected peplum design, embroidered with stones, pearls and Swarovski crystals. And I’m glad she did; Roberts and her mile-long legs killed it on the red carpet, and I bet more than one star saw her dress and wished she’d had to guts to go short instead of pshaw-ing the high hemline like I had.

Zooey Deschanel Emmys 2014 Jordan Strauss/AP

Alex Apatoff, Senior Style Editor: This was not a popular choice around the office, and I understand why: It isn’t Zooey Deschanel’s most successful outing, hair and makeup-wise. But if you just concentrate on the dress — the vibrant, Day-Glo pink, the classic, retro cut and the silver accessories she paired with it (including Forevermark by Maria Canale diamonds and a Roger Vivier clutch) — I think it’s elegant, memorable and right on trend for a TV awards show. I may be a sucker for all things Oscar de la Renta, and that may be clouding my judgment, but I stand by this choice because sometimes I think “simply striking” is the best style statement one can make.

Camila Alves Emmys 2014Jason Merritt/Getty

Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: The only thing that could distract me from Matthew McConaughey’s spray tan was his wife’s crazy-hot Zuhair Murad gown. The mosaic pattern, scoop neckline and sheer paneling on the gown made a statement — but I suppose anything that skims Alves’s perfect curves would make a statement. It also reminded me of Beyoncé‘s sheer patterned Michael Costello gown she wore to the Grammys earlier this year. It would also make for a killer afterparty dress, say, for my wedding in October.

Sarah Hyland Emmys 2014Jason Merritt/Getty

Jackie Fields, Beauty Writer: The moment I saw her Tweet, “I’m taking an uber SUV to the #Emmys because my car was too small for my dress …” I knew Sarah Hyland’s look would be nothing short of unforgettable. Sure, I bet that the exit from said SUV wasn’t the most graceful, but who would care after seeing her in this two-piece Christian Siriano design? I love the contrast of the teeny crop top and her voluminous high-waist skirt, which she balanced with an oversize bun (so smart). Hyland also made a memorable impression at the 2011 Emmys in coral Siriano; so what has this young star just taught us? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Gwen Stefani Emmys 2014Christopher Polk/Getty

Catherine Kast, Style Writer: This isn’t princessy, it isn’t “old Hollywood glamour.” Heck, it isn’t even a dress. It’s two pieces of divine Swarovski-crystal-crusted Versace drama. I want to shake Gwen Stefani‘s hand for wearing totally different looks two nights in a row and for maintaining a totally modern — nay, futuristic — vibe both nights. My favorite element of this Atelier Versace look? The plunging-V neck that seems risqué without being too revealing thanks to strategic gilded detailing. Oh, and the fact that she was channeling Donatella Versace with her stick-straight hair? Total rock star move.

Heidi Klum Emmys 2014Jeff Vespa/WireImage

Ana Calderone, Editorial Assistant: I knew I was going to fall in love with Heidi Klum‘s Zac Posen gown as soon as I saw the sketch that Posen gave exclusively to PEOPLE. In a sea of red dresses, she could have gotten lost, but the sleekness and elegance of the dress (and that cape!) really won me over. Plus her golden locks and bronzed skin contrasted perfectly with the “Camellia” color. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

#TBT Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani's Ever-Evolving Couple Hairstyles

We’re stoked that Gwen Stefani decided to bring in hubby Gavin Rossdale to serve as a mentor on The Voice. Mainly because of the eye candy, but also because it reminded us how far they’ve both come, hairstyle-wise, since we fell in love with the couple in the late ’90s. We already spend several hours a day discussing the L.A.M.B. fashionista’s killer style (what, you don’t?), so now let’s discuss the Bush frontman’s hair-volution.

Gavin and Gwen Hair 1Ron Galella, Ltd./WireImage

First there was the “Sun-In” phase seen above. This shot was snapped at the MTV Awards in 2001 (AKA the height of boy band highlights), so we can hardly blame the rock star for attempting to lighten up his locks to a coppery hue, but we think that golden strands are best left to the master of all things blonde: Gwen (who somehow manages to make these pigtails almost acceptable).

Gavin and Gwen Hair 5L. Cohen/WireImage

Next up: capped-and-curly Gavin. The tucked-hair, natural curls and backwards cabbie-hat are all pretty quintessential early ’00s. P.S. If they didn’t use this pic as their holiday card that year, that was a majorly missed opportunity.

During the peak of Gwen’s fringed-and-bobbed Harajuku stage in 2006, Gavin shaved off his locks in a military-style buzz cut. We’re not entirely mad at his short cut, but we can’t help but favor his signature longer stands.

Gwen and Gavin Hair 4Trae Patton/NBC

For his appearances on The Voice this week, Gavin flaunts a super sleek style (thanks to celeb-loved Layrite pomade) pulled back into a mini knot (his latest go-to style). In fact, of all the celeb man buns out there (and there are a lot), this might just be our fave.

Which of Gavin’s looks do you love? Are you watching him help Gwen out on The Voice? Tell us your thoughts below!

Gwen Stefani's The Voice Hair Provides Endless Styling Inspiration

If you couldn’t tell by now, the entire style team has a major girl crush on Gwen Stefani. We could talk about her makeup for hours, we obsess over her killer style and we even have a fascination with her (equally-trendsetting) husband, Gavin.

Gwen Voice HairTrae Patton/NBC (3); Courtesy Gwen Stefanis

So we’re pretty stoked that we get to watch the platinum bombshell several times a week on The Voice (and yes, we’re 100 percent #TeamGwen). Today, we’re geeking out over her incredibly versatile hairstyles. Honestly, who else can do so much with her relatively short (by Hollywood standards) shoulder-length hair? No one, that’s who. Let’s take a look at the hotness.

First there’s the retro Marilyn Monroe-esque curls, which we think of as “classic Gwen” since its her go-to style that she’s been flaunting forever (well, at least since her Tragic Kingdom days).

Gwen Voice HairTrae Patton/NBC (3); Courtesy Gwen Stefanis

Next there’s the super edgy (and impossibly cool) dip-dyed look. We speculate that this is the work of either a clip-in colored extension (Manic Panic makes great ones) or some temporary hair-color spray since the black tips were very short-lived.

RELATED PHOTOS: Check out these celeb hair makeovers!

Then she tried a smoother version of the “classic Gwen”, sporting softer, brushed-out waves instead of curls and anchoring them with two exposed hair pins (a huge trend for fall — of course she’s on the cutting edge).

Gwen Voice HairTrae Patton/NBC (3); Courtesy Gwen Stefanis

And finally (this week, anyway) she gives the pin-up “Victory Roll” a moden twist by rolling up the front of her hair but keeping the rest super sleek.

Gwen Voice HairTrae Patton/NBC (3); Courtesy Gwen Stefanis

We chatted with her long-time hair guru Danilo (Pantene’s Celebrity Stylist and Global Ambassador) who’s been coiffing up our girl on set — and he spilled that working with her is just as fun as we imagined. “Gwen is so playful and creative. She’s an artist. Everyday we look at what she’s wearing, what the demands are of the day and what type of vibe we want to project,” Danilo explains. “Sometimes she has ideas of her own, sometimes we collaborate. And then we just start styling and twisting until she owns it and brings it to life.” Then he promised us that there are even cooler looks coming in future episodes. We can’t wait to see what she’ll try next — especially considering that she’ll likely majorly turn things up with a new single to promote!

Would you try any of these hairstyles? Are you watching The Voice? Do you love Gwen as much as we do?

We’re constantly taking fashion (and beauty) cues from trendsetting designer, musician and Voice judge Gwen Stefani. But where does the icon draw inspiration for her always-envious rocker-chic style? Her younger self.

Stefani, who is featured in the January issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, discusses fashion, along with her guilty pleasures and family traditions, and shared that her killer style is based off of her own pre-teen wardrobe. (How very meta of her!)

“My eighth-grade self,” she says when asked about what influences her outfit choices. “In 1982, I was into ska music, James Dean, and the Latino culture in my Southern California neighborhood. As a result, I tried to dress outside the box, different from what the other kids were wearing, with a laid-back vibe — and big accessories. More than 30 years later, that’s still my look.”

With a style as iconic as Stefani’s, it’s no wonder the star turns to her earlier years. But with three successful clothing lines to date, we happen to think the fashion mogul’s 2014 looks are some of her best yet.

What do you think of Stefani’s style? How do you think it’s evolved over the years? Tell us below!

Style and Beauty Director Andrea Lavinthal will be interviewing all the stylish stars to hit the PEOPLE Magazine Award red carpet, which has fellow editors asking a very important question: How should she wear her hair when in the presence of celebs like Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez and more A-listers? (It’s a big decision, you guys!) So we picked out three mane looks inspired by well-tressed attendees to help her out.

• The Jennifer Aniston Pony
Sure, Jen will probably wear her hair down, but we love when the actress switches things up and pulls her hair back. That’s why we’ve picked this sleek, side-swept look.

Kate Hudson WavesJeffrey Mayer/WireImage

• The Classic Kate Hudson Waves
You can never go wrong with some textured tousled strands. And Kate’s are the best in the biz.

• The Nicole Richie Messy Updo
We doubt Andrea will dye her hair blue, but she could show up with a fun pulled-back style like Nicole!

And of course Andrea can always show up and shock everyone with a Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting pixie. Be sure to check back here for a behind-the-scenes hair photo! And remember to tune in to the PMAs tonight at 9 p.m. on NBC.

Style Icon of the Year Winner Gwen Stefani: My Favorite Pieces to Wear Are Ones I've Made

It’s no surprise that Gwen Stefani was showstopping on the PEOPLE Magazine Awards red carpet — after all, her style is so good we couldn’t help but revisit her whole 2014 on the red carpet. (Even host Nick Cannon said, “Gwen Stefani said she liked my outfit, and now my night is complete!”)

And in her Alexandre Vauthier Couture pearl-encrusted jacket and J Brand pants (not to mention that hairstyle — check out the 360° above!) she certainly lived up to her reputation as a fashionista. And as an incredibly fit person.

The jacket “weighs about 2,000 pounds. I’m not kidding you. Feel this part! It’s definitely — it’s worth it — it’s so beautiful, it’s such an amazing piece,” she said on the red carpet.

Asking her to pick her favorite dress is almost as hard as wearing the jacket. “There’s been so many outfits being on [The Voice]. I really like making pieces,” she says. “The finale piece I made yesterday was a L.A.M.B. custom, kinda chunk-some thing that we did. I made another piece that was L.A.M.B. earlier that had a little black-and-white kinda thing. Those are my favorite, they take time, there are a lot of fittings. But I love the process and kind of doing that — it’s like the reward of the work.”

She did nab one more reward for her work: a Style Icon of the Year PEOPLE Magazine Award. “I’ve always loved fashion. I was a little girl, playing Barbies — my mom was the main person making clothes for me my whole life,” she said in her acceptance speech. “Going thrift store shopping, making clothes for No Doubt. Who knew I’d be standing here getting an award for doing something that I love?” We could have guessed.

Gwen Stefani's Slope Style Is Exactly the Same As Her Street Style

Celebrities don’t vacation like the rest of us, so you wouldn’t expect them to dress for their winter activities like the rest of us, either. Case in point: While we were hitting the slopes in a zip-up from 2008 and some ski pants that kinda still fit, Gwen Stefani was shredding powder in snow attire that looks like she pulled it right out of her day-to-day closet.

As a matter of fact, she might as well have — the star is using her time in Mammoth, California to do double duty: One half fun family bonding time, the other half modeling her new activewear collection, Burton x L.A.M.B. That might explain why the leopard-print, cargo and plaid outfits are 100 percent signature Stefani, as well as why she’s got a major smoky eye, red lip and great hair in all the shots.

She even conscripts her sister-in-law to do some modeling for her, showing off a white cheetah print two-piece look with edgy details. “Who else has that? Nobody has that,” Stefani declares in the video.

We’re all for looking cute après-ski, but Stefani may have raised the bar for us during ski as well. Are you loving her looks? Do you like treating the ski slopes like your personal runway? Weigh in below!

Pucker up! Gwen Stefani‘s already filled your shoe, clothing and perfume wardrobes, and now she’s looking to take over your makeup bag.

“I am working on some lipsticks,” Stefani told PEOPLE Tuesday afternoon at SoHo House West Hollywood, where she announced the date of her upcoming concert for MasterCard’s Priceless Surprises. “This red that I’m wearing right now is a prototype.”

The star is certainly no stranger to bold beauty looks, but up until she became her own best lip model (and formula tester), there were some hues that simply just weren’t for her.

“I wear so many different shades, but I’m not super into the orange-reds,” says PEOPLE Magazine’s “Style Icon”, who says she wears all different brands of lipstick too. “I have investigated them lately a lot.”

And as her career keeps morphing, the rocker/mom/designer/Voice host says her current style is just an advanced version of her old-school looks. “I’m kind of always evolving, but I think that style is also your personality, so I’m always going to be the same person,” Stefani says. “What I wore in a high school is a version of what I wear now. I still love Hollywood glamour; I still love everything old school.”

One more thing that’s just like it was in high school? Her surprise every time she hits the red carpet. “This is so weird. What am I doing here? Who am I?” Stefani says of her thoughts when the flashbulbs start popping.
