Would You Wear Bold Eyes and Lips Like Gwen Stefani?

Gwen Stefani Hair and Makeup

As far as bright red lips and platinum hair go, Gwen Stefani has that market — or red carpet, if you will — cornered. She pulls this one-two beauty punch off whether she’s playing in the park with sons Zuma and Kingston or hitting a fancy fundraiser. But for a recent Cannes Film Festival movie screening, she upped the ante by pairing her standbys with sparkling navy blue eye shadow and what looks to be multiple sets of false lashes. We always follow the rule of focusing on eyes or lips, never both, but with Stefani it seems okay to break these age-old directives. What do you think? Tell us: Would you pair a dramatic smokey eye with bright lipstick?

Gwen Stefani Thought Fashion Was ‘Stuck Up’

Growing up in Anaheim, Calif., Gwen Stefani always found fashion elusive. “It was something I couldn’t touch,” she reveals in a recent interview with Stylist magazine. “I’d never even look in fashion magazines because for me, that was just a stuck-up world.” Fast forward a couple decades, and the 41-year-old is a brand ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, helms a venerable fashion empire and rocks a practically-trademarked look. “It never gets old,” she says of signature crimson lips and platinum locks, which she touches up bi-weekly, “I could do it all day long — I’ve been doing it since I was a little girl.” But much like longevity, identity is easily compromised in Hollywood. “When you start out being on covers of magazines, there’s so much politics,” she explains. “You’re like, ‘Wait, I don’t wear lavender, that’s not what I do.’ That’s the fun thing about success: the freedom you get and people learning to trust you and being inspired by you.” –Justine Harman

Gwen Stefani Takes Her Harajuku Style to Target

Gwen Stefani‘s style is no longer just for grown-ups. The successful designer — and No Doubt frontwoman — announced today that she’s partnering with Target to create Harajuku Mini, an affordable, two-installment collection for babies, children and tweens. The line will first debut in Target stores and on target.com on Nov. 13, with a second delivery in January. Prices will range from $3.99 to $29.99. “Harajuku Mini is a dream come true,” Stefani told WWD. “I’ve always wanted to do a cool children’s fashion line inspired by the supercute and playful kid’s clothing you find in Japan.” Stefani, herself a mom of two young boys, knows her customer well, and says the whole idea of the line “is about being creative, expressing your own individuality and having fun getting dressed.” This marks the first time the designer, who’s had success with her L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers lines, has created clothes for babies and boys. “Target has given me the creative freedom to design kid’s clothing that is different than most anything you usually see out there with great quality, attention to detail and most of all, available at amazing prices,” Stefani said. Her collection follows recent collaborations between Target and brands like Calypso St. Barth, Petit Tresor and coming soon, Missoni.

Stars Go Mad for Banana Republic’s Sleek ‘Mad Men’ Collection

Banana Republic Mad MenBroadimage; Pacific Coast News; Flynet

Mad Men may not be on the air at the moment, but that sexy ’60s style lives on thanks to Banana Republic’s new line of clothes, inspired by the Joan Harrises and Peggy Olsons of the past.

And while we’ve found ourselves going “mad” for the line, it appears Hollywood has, too! Gwen Stefani stepped out earlier this month in the black lace top ($45), which 90210 star Jessica Stroup dressed up for an event over the summer. Giuliana Rancic wore the same blouse in gold for a taping of E! News, too.

Emmy Rossum took her love of lace up a notch, sporting the black knit grace lace dress ($150) on a movie set in Los Angeles. Jaime King rocked the look, too, wearing it in white to a party at Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont.

Mom-to-be Hilary Duff is even in on the action; she carried the grey animal-print cardigan ($89.50) while vacationing in Brazil in September. They may not be heading to an advertising office, but we think these ladies sure look slick in their Mad Men-inspired styles. Tell us: Have you shopped the Mad Men for Banana Republic collection yet?

Gwen Stefani admits it: It’s not easy to look like her.

“The makeup goes on every day,” she confesses in the November issue of InStyle. “Even if I’m not going anywhere.”

The Old Hollywood look is inspired by a mix of muses including Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe — “I do my roots as often as [she] did hers” — as well as figuring out what worked at an early age. “When I was 17, my grandmother got me a gift pack with all these different colored lipsticks, and one of them was burgundy,” she tells the mag. “I tried it on and looked in the rear-view mirror and said, ‘That looks good.’ I’ve worn it ever since.”

Being married to a rock star is an added incentive; she often dresses to impress hubby Gavin Rossdale. “It was like my own runway. I thought, ‘You are being such an idiot!’” she admits of trying on five outfits before leaving the house for a date. Apparently, Rossdale is a hard act to follow: “He looks good in everything.”

Perhaps Stefani’s creative indecisiveness has trickled down to her two sons, who are fashion plates in their own right. “I like them to be creative and have fun,” she says of 5-year-old Kingston and 3-year-old Zuma. “Sometimes they’ll get dressed and it’s horrifying. But they often come out in outfits that are awesome.”

Gwen Stefani is one of the few celebrities who can pull off just about any look. Peep-toe booties at the grocery store? Sure! Head-to-toe plaid? Totally!

But one of the singer’s recent looks had us a bit stuck. At the Hollywood premiere of Angelina Jolie‘s In the Land of Blood and Honey last month, Stefani showed up wearing a grommet-adorned jumper, stacked wedges and a front bun.

We worship the ground the No Doubt singer walks on, but we’re not sure we can really get on board with the jumpsuit — perhaps a bit more reminiscent of skydiving gear than high style.

What do you think? Tell us: Are you loving Stefani’s jumpsuit?

In our hearts, Gwen Stefani can do no wrong — but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t had a questionable fashion moment or two.

While celebrating Stella and Paul McCartney at a bash in Los Angeles recently, Stefani surfaced in a sexy jumpsuit by Stella, featuring a peplum and lots of sheer paneling down the side. She finished the look with a small Kelly Wearstler clutch, killer heels and her signature red lip.

Stefani looks fierce — but is the jumpsuit itself as big of a hit as its wearer? Voice your opinion in the poll and comments below.

She’s back … and better than ever! Though Gwen Stefani never really went anywhere, her band No Doubt just released their first single in 10 years and are in the midst of promoting a new album, which means the flawless singer is gallivanting around in the most stylish rocker-chic outfits imaginable.

Stefani‘s latest look? A head-to-toe jaguar-print Blumarine pantsuit, which she finished off with her signatures: blonde tresses and a red lip. Keep in mind that the she donned this outrageous ensemble while waiting outside of her N.Y.C hotel on Wednesday afternoon in 85-degree heat. Just a leisurely mid-day outfit as far as the mom of two is concerned!

Over the weekend, the 42-year-old upstaged every tween at the Teen Choice Awards in a leather vest and pants by YSL. But it was her stylish touches — cat-eye frames, red lips and a gold anklet (yep, they’re back!) — that made the look as stellar as it was.

Don’t get us wrong: we’re pumped about new No Doubt music, but we’re almost more excited to see what else the rock goddess wears during her promotional jaunt. Tell us: What other celebrity could get away with wearing Stefani’s head-to-toe animal-print look?

How Gwen Stefani’s Grandma Forever Changed Her Style

Ever since No Doubt’s “Just A Girl” video debuted in 1995, Gwen Stefani‘s signature red lip has been emulated by fashionistas everywhere. But the inspiration behind the look wasn’t the star’s idea — it came from someone older and wiser: her grandmother.

Thinking back to her high school years, when her grandmother gave her a tube of crimson-red lip color, the singer tells Harper’s Bazaar, “I remember sitting in my ghetto, beat-up Honda Prelude, and putting on that lipstick in the rear-view mirror and being like, ‘Uh-huh, I like that. That’s the sh** right there.’ I never stopped after that.”

The glossy’s cover girl also dishes on the origin of her other style signature: her hair. According to the rocker, at 25 she spent eight hours at a salon in Long Beach, Calif., dyeing her hair platinum blonde — and she immediately loved the new ‘do. “It was like I’d unlocked the key,” she reveals. “I remember feeling like, ‘I have arrived. This is me. Finally.’”

Something else that was different in No Doubt’s early days? Designers weren’t begging to dress Stefani. “I did my own makeup, my own costumes; I did everything myself. I didn’t even know there were stylists,” the star admits.

Gwen Stefani Harper's BazaarTerry Richardson for Harper’s Bazaar

Almost two decades later, it’s safe to say the icon no longer has to create her own clothes. However, with fame has come some frustration with the media. “I hate talking about my body [all the time]; it’s ridiculous,” she says. “There is no secret: You just have to eat healthy, work out, and torture yourself!” And that statement is reason #124 why we love the No Doubt frontwoman: she’s refreshingly honest.

For more of Stefani’s interview, head to HarpersBazaar.com/GwenStefani and pick up the September issue (the magazine’s largest in its 145-year history!), on newsstands Aug. 21. Tell us: What do you think of Stefani’s signature style?

So many beach styles — so little summertime! Though we only have a few more weeks of beach weather left, we’re pining for more — not only so we can savor the season, but also so we can try out some of the sleek cover-ups seen above.

Gabrielle Union (left) caught some waves in Miami in June, wrapping the bottom of her black bikini in a printed sarong. A month later, in Santa Monica., Calif., Gwen Stefani (second from left) covered up in a breezy white tee and matching peasant skirt. Never one to shy away from bold details, Kate Moss (center) topped her swimsuit with a textured white tunic while in St. Tropez, France.

Meanwhile, Elle Macpherson (second from right) — on the island of Formentera — highlighted her beach body in a little black cotton dress. And always erring on the side of sexy, Sofia Vergara (right) opted for a plunging halter with side cutouts and gold detail while vacationing in Cozumel, Mexico.

Five women, five very different ways of covering up. But which one is your favorite? Vote in our poll below; your feedback could appear in an upcoming issue of PEOPLE!

Where Did Gwen Stefani Shop as a Teen?

Gwen Stefani recently revealed that her grandmother was behind her big beauty moves, and it sounds like the other woman in her life — her mom — inspired her sense of fashion.

“I think I’ve always, my whole life, loved to get dressed up and even if nobody was looking at me, I would still get dressed up,” Stefani tells Harper’s Bazaar The Look. “My mom took me to the fabric store … we made clothes from when I was a little girl.”

But she really grew into her look in her teens. “High school was really when I discovered music and I figured out, ‘Oh, this defines me,’ and I was making thrift-store clothes,” she reveals. “I used to do a lot of buying of clothes and then altering them to make them how I wanted — lots of glue guns, lots of Velcro.”

The rock star — who’s worn everything from Stella McCartney jumpsuits to Jaguar-print suits — says she holds onto all of her costumes. “I save all that kind of stuff in storage,” she admits. “I usually do an auction and then keep something for archives. I have a lot of storage, I’ve never been there but I can imagine.” Now that’s a space we’d love to check out.

Which Star Has Alice + Olivia’s Stacey Bendet Always Wanted to Dress?

Alice + Olivia‘s colorful, girly creations are a favorite here at StyleWatch — and a favorite in Hollywood. Not only does designer Stacey Bendet have a close relationship with Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 star Krysten Ritter, but she always draws a group of young starlets to her presentations; this season, Lauren Conrad, Jamie Chung, Elisabeth Moss and Odette Annable were just a few notable names spotted inside.

But there’s one star in particular she’s always hoped to dress, and somewhat serendipitously, her dream just recently came true.

“I love Gwen Stefani, and I think she has such amazing style,” Bendet told PEOPLE Monday during her show. “But I never thought about dressing her because she has her own clothing line.”

As luck would have it, though, “she just wore one of our leather corseted gowns in [the October 2012 issue of] Marie Claire. I was so proud when I saw that, because when you dress another designer, it’s like a different level of pride.”

Bendet also has a lot of pride in her spring 2013 collection (above), filled with colorful 1950s-inspired day dresses, skirts created in collaboration with Magnum ice cream and more than a few red-carpet-worthy gowns. “There are some things that could work for their sexiness, some for their fashion,” she said, pointing out a black-and-white color-blocked beaded dress (above, left). “A lot of girls are into those fuller, flirty skirts lately, too. But I’m excited to hopefully see a lot of different styles on the red carpet.”

Friday Flashback: Gwen Stefani’s Pink Cornrows

Ron Galella/Wireimage

Perhaps, like us, you’ve tried to block out most of the fashion and beauty from the year 2000. There were some bad moments during that time period, but when we came across this photo of Gwen Stefani from February of that year, we just couldn’t keep it to ourselves.

You probably remember that the singer, now known for her signature platinum locks, had pink hair for a while. But we had completely forgotten that she rocked cornrows at the same time. We dug back in our archives looking for old photos of Stefani to celebrate this week’s release of No Doubt’s new CD, Push and Shove.

It wasn’t just the hair she had that left our jaws on the floor, though. It was also the hair Stefani didn’t have. We’re referring to those barely-there eyebrows. She complemented the look with knee-high magenta boots, a leopard-print midi and extra-large gold hoops.

Quite a different Stefani than we’re used to seeing nowadays. But if this flashback proves anything, it’s that the singer has always been fashion-forward and unafraid to take risks. Thankfully, her risks no longer involve a bottle of neon Manic Panic. Tell us: Would you like to see Stefani return to her pink roots? Or should she try another color in lieu of her blonde strands?

Gwen Stefani is ringing in the New Year quite fashionably — on the cover of Vogue.

The singer fronts the fashion magazine’s January issue, and looks absolutely gorgeous doing so. Shot by Annie Leibovitz, Stefani sits atop a piano wearing black trousers, a gold-flecked jacket, a bow-tie shirt and a black oversized hat — a head-to-toe look from Hedi Slimane’s debut collection for Saint Laurent.

Inside the magazine, Stefani poses with her No Doubt bandmates and models more pieces from the spring Saint Laurent collection, as well as designs by A.L.C. and Alexander Wang. She also talks reuniting with No Doubt, motherhood and marriage (10 years!) in the cover story.

More Proof the ’90s Are Back: Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens Give Us Gwen Stefani Flashbacks

We were hesitant to believe the ’90s were back when Saint Laurent sent grunge down the runway, or when our style icon Diane Kruger wore overalls or we saw tie-dyed jeans out and about.

But there’s no denying that the decade has returned in a big way with this latest development: Spring Breakers stars Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez have been sporting face jewelry and faux-bindis, just like Gwen Stefani did back in the day.

PHOTOS: Do these star beauty looks work? Vote in our gallery!

Hudgens (left) wore hers with sparkly accents around her eyebrows to rock out at Coachella, while Gomez’s (right) was for a performance of her Bollywood-flavored song “Come & Get It” at the MTV Movie Awards. And lest you think Gomez was just doing it as part of a costume, we just spotted her leaving the Ellen set with another similar style.

But do they measure up to the original statement bindi-wearer, Stefani, who famously wore hers with blue pigtail buns at the 1998 Grammys? Tell us in the comments below.

Five Ways to Fauxhawk, as Seen at the Met Gala

Normally, we’d call fauxhawks ‘pretty crazy,’ but given that we’ve seen this, this and this at Monday night’s Met Gala in New York City … they’re actually almost ‘pretty tame’ by comparison. However, when you’ve got Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani and Julianne Moore all sporting similar hairstyles at the same major punk-themed event, you most certainly have a trend. One that we’re not sure we’d try, but that we’re loving on these stars.

Lopez’s gravity-defying look was a major departure from her typical waves and curls, calling to mind, perhaps, a long-haired, brunette Pink. Emily Blunt took an elegant approach to her hair, opting for some voluminous twists at the front leading to a messy updo at her crown. Stefani brought us (fittingly) back to her punkier days a bit, opting for a serious side-part and bangs to go with her topknot.

PHOTOS: The most fabulous gowns from Monday night’s Met Gala!

Meanwhile, Jennifer Morrison lifted her hair to new heights (though not THIS high) to contrast with her girly gown. And Moore’s poufy pompadour added at least three inches to the star’s petite frame.

Considering some stars totally skipped out on having fun with the night’s theme, we’re glad these gals at least unleashed the ’90s in their hair.

Do you have a favorite fauxhawk? Would you ever try the trend?

Five Fun Ways to Wear Printed Pants

Celebs in Printed PantsSplash News Online; AKM-GSI; Splash News Online; AKM-GSI; FameFlynet

We get it: You’re skeptical of silky printed pants. You have every right to be. Do them wrong, and you’re in pajama territory. Or worse: Ridiculous fancy sweatpant territory.

But there’s hope, and it comes in the form of these five celebs, who have all worn printed pants within the last few weeks and looked darn adorable doing so. In styles ranging from super-comfy to super-funky, they give us assurance that we too can pull off this tricky trend.

RELATED PHOTOS: Check out even more cool ways to wear this trend!

From left: Pippa Middleton‘s outfit would look just as good with jeans, but her Alice by Temperley pants give the look a bright spin that ensures she’ll stand out on the dance floor. Zoë Saldana‘s Ella Moss cropped patterned pair can be dressed up, but with jeans and cool sunglasses, they’re perfect for a low-key walk around town (much better than ratty sweats!). Kate Beckinsale looks totally polished (but completely comfortable) in her racer-stripe Diane von Furstenberg pair and a black blazer while stepping off a flight.

Finally, Gwen Stefani plays up the funky aspect of her bold, blousy pair with multihue Quay Eyeware frames and eye-catching yellow sandals, while Disney star Zendaya embraces the look completely by going head-to-toe with the print and bright pink shades of her cropped pants.

Tell us: Are you into this trend, or have you been afraid to try it? Whose look would you wear?
