Kylie Cosmetics
See, Jenner’s clip (which is really less of a music video and more of a long, artfully shot commercial) is eerily similar to some we’ve seen in recent years from the likes of Rihanna, Beyoncé and, yes, even her brother-in-law Kanye West. “Glosses” is directed by Colin Tilley, the man responsible for Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda,” Justin Bieber’s “Confident” and many other popular music videos, and it borrows some themes we’ve seen time and time again in the genre. The video also brings to mind some older hits from the early aughts — but we’re not totally sure those are intentional (what year was Kylie born again?). Here, we take a semi-deep dive into some of the more obvious inspirations.
Dropping a surprise video is a very Beyoncé thing to do (after all, Bey literally did the exact same thing today), and Kylie seemingly channels both “03 Bonnie and Clyde” Bey and On the Run trailer Bey.

But it’s not all about Bey. The opening desert-y mountain shot is reminiscent of “Bound 2,” Kanye’s NSFW ode to wife Kim Kardashian.

Obviously, there’s lip gloss application, which calls to mind Kim’s modern-day classic, “Jam (Turn It Up),” with its many close-up glossy-lipped shots.

The lip gloss names (and/or character names? Unclear.) are very “Bad Blood”-esque, no?

And we would be remiss not to point out the influence of Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” throughout the whole thing.

But unlike Rihanna, they get caught in the end, just like Eve and Gwen Stefani in “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” (and again, Bey in On the Run).

And although the two videos couldn’t be more different, we can’t forget the original ode to shiny lips, Lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss.”
